                                          Atom Cigarettes

Shortly after WWII, when the government began to lift the veil of secrecy which surrounded the development of the first atomic bomb, there was increased public fascination with the whole process of nuclear fusion and the potential for harnessing the immense power for peaceful purposes. Not coincidently, Leighton Tobacco Co. of New York City  introduced a brand called Atom in 1949 which featured orange, blue and red translucent tips. Like so many other fads, the cigarette had a very short life but like so many other brands, Atom Cigarettes reflected the mood of the times.
